Cap context:

This cap was inspired by my trip to Italy and the wonderful woman winemakers I met there...

The wine industry in Australia is pretty young, relatively speaking, and so our expectation of 'good' wine generally refers to a 'conventional' wine - clean, clear and crisp. Simply put, conventional winemaking utilises (often toxic) chemicals for spraying in the vineyard, and fining and filtering the wine before bottling - through eggs and milk products. Ultimately, the final product has been heavily added to, and/or stripped away from, and the wine becomes less about place, terroir, soil, varietal, climate, and more about producing the exact same wine, year in year out to meet consumers expectations.

Now, often we think the alternative - let's go with 'traditional' wine (sometimes we call it 'natural' wine) - is only ever cloudy, funky, stinky wine, but that is not the case at all. There are many different examples of traditional wine.

You might find traditional wine made with organic or biodynamically-grown grapes, that employ conscious viticultural practices to preserve and enhance the natural biodiversity of its environment, without using toxic chemicals, thus producing 'healthy' grapes.

Or, you might find wines that are the product of 'minimal intervention' winemaking, where the wines are not overly handled in the winery - the fermentation happens spontaneously, no synthetic products are added to the wine, and nothing is taken away (it's not fined of filtered), thus delivering wines each vintage that reflect the exact climatic conditions of that harvest.

OR, you might find wines that come from places that have been making wine for centuries in a certain fashion, where the wine is 'natural', but the output is first and foremost about history, tradition and provenance. To an immature Aussie wine drinker (and I put myself in this category), we might be forgiven for thinking it's a 'natty wine', however to these winemakers, it's not 'natural', it's just wine...

So, to all the women winemakers in Italy who showed me the beauty and integrity in that their wine reflects place first, and themselves as a winemaker last, and that they're simply the guardians of the land for a time - this cap is for you!

Big thanks to @worktones for being straight up legends, and also, for serving up always beautiful and always fun things ❤️🧢🍷

Can't wait to see this on heads!
