Beaune 1er Cru ‘Les Coucherias’ which comes from old French ‘coiches’ (bushes) and ‘reaul’ (steep) is a steep parcel high on the slope, on the site of an old quarry which was used in the Middle Ages for the construction of the Hospices de Beaune.

Much of the sub-soil is limestone, allowing for root penetration and drainage, with a topsoil of mixed clay and limestone. In biodynamic agriculture since 1979, the vineyard is a south-facing semi-circle —a very warm spot giving a full, ripe wine.

Lovely aromas of pear, quince, lime-flower and ripe citrus. The palate is elegant and supple, with white fruits, almond, citrus and caramel, framed in firm acidity and mineral flavours, showing good ripeness but finishing with firm, stony acidity.

About the Winemaker

Jean-Claude Rateau (who has arguably the most famous moustache in Burgundy) is incontestably the godfather and guru of biodynamic wine farming in the Burgundy region. Having been introduced to biodynamics very early, Jean-Claude Rateau became the first vigneron in Burgundy, and the fourth in the whole of France, to adopt biodynamic principles when taking over 1.5ha of family vines in 1979.

The Domaine ownership is currently being transferred to Amel Nouar, a soulful winemaker with Algerian heritage who has been working with John-Claude for 8 years. The wines in this flight are reflective of Amel’s stewardship within this incredible vineyard and winery.
